Practicals are equally important as the theory subject. By performing the practicals, students learn by actual participation, which lasts in their memory for a longer time duration. Generally, most students forget the concepts that they have learned in the theory classes. But, when they perform the Science practicals, they remember it for a longer period of time. We easily forget the things that we listen to, but what we see remains firmly etched in our memory. CBSE has therefore introduced practicals for Science subjects in Class 9. Here we have provided all the details of CBSE Class 9 Science practicals for students.
Science practicals not only help students to understand the concepts but also generate interest among them. They get a platform where they can try out different things and showcase their creativity. In this way, the love of Science also gets enhanced among them. Moreover, students who find Science to be difficult also begin taking an interest in the subject.
CBSE has provided the official syllabus for Class 9 Science practicals. Board has allocated 30 periods for conducting all the practicals. Here we have provided a list of Science experiments that students need to perform in the laboratory. Further, we have also provided the information on the lab manual, important questions asked in practical exams and NCERT science manual kit.
a) A true solution of common salt, sugar and alum
b) A suspension of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in water
c) A colloidal solution of starch in water and egg albumin/milk in water and distinguish between these on the basis of transparency filtration criterion stability
using iron filings and sulphur powder and distinguishing between these on the basis of:
(i) Appearance, i.e., homogeneity and heterogeneity
(iii) Behaviour towards carbon disulphide as a solvent
3) Separation of the components of a mixture of sand, common salt and ammonium chloride (or camphor). (not included for this academic year)
4) Perform the following reactions and classify them as physical or chemical changes:
a) Iron with copper sulphate solution in water
b) Burning of magnesium ribbon in air
d) Heating of copper sulphate crystals
e) Sodium sulphate with barium chloride in the form of their solutions in water
5) Preparation of stained temporary mounts of
to record observations and draw their labelled diagrams
6) Identification of Parenchyma, collenchyma and Sclerenchyma tissues in plants, striped, smooth and cardiac muscle fibres and nerve cells in animals, from prepared slides. Draw their labelled diagrams.
7) Determination of the density of solid (denser than water) by using a spring balance and a measuring cylinder.
8) Establishing the relation between the loss in weight of a solid when fully immersed in
b) Strongly salty water with the weight of water displaced by it by taking at least two different solids
9) Verification of the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction.
10) Determination of the speed of a pulse propagated through a stretched string/slinky (helical spring). (not included for the academic year)
11) Study of the characteristics of Spirogyra, Agaricus, Moss, Fern, Pinus (either with male or female cone) and an Angiospermic plant. Draw and give two identifying features of groups they belong to. (not included for the academic year)
12) Observe the given pictures/charts/models of earthworm, cockroach, bony fish and bird. For each organism, draw their picture and record: (not included for the academic year)
a) One specific feature of its phylum
b) One adaptive feature with reference to its habitat
13) Verification of the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction. (not included for academic year)
14) Study of the external features of root, stem, leaf and flower of monocot and dicot plants. (not included for academic year)
Students performing experiments by themselves is a thrilling experience as they learn by participating. All the experiments are performed in the school Science laboratory. So, students must be aware of certain rules and regulations before performing experiments in the laboratory. For this purpose, the CBSE class 9 Science lab manual has been provided by the board. The laboratory manual familiarises students with the general facilities, chemical and glassware, measuring instruments, equipment, specimen available in a school Science laboratory. The NCERT class 9 Science manual kit describes the kit items and their uses. It contains the activities of NCERT class 9 Science textbook. Also, the experiments that are provided can be performed using this kit. The NCERT textbooks are designed in such a way that it covers various activities. In each chapter, topics are explained with the help of activities. Just merely reading through the textbook will not help students to understand these concepts explained. It is required that students perform these activities. This can be done through the NCERT manual of Class 9 Science kit. Performing these activities will enable students to think and explore.
