Sugarcane is a species of grass that belongs to the genus  Saccharum,  and family  Poaceae.  It is thought to have originated in New Guinea and then cultivated throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Close to 70% of the world’s sugar is produced from the  S.officinarum . There are other species of sugarcane such as the  Saccharum sinense, Saccharum spontaneum  and the  Saccharum barberi. Besides the production of sugar, the plant also has many other uses, such as the production of ethanol, fertilizer and bio-plastics. It is also used as farmfeed for livestock. Products derived from sugarcane include rum, molasses, and bagasse.
