The coconut tree belongs to the family  Arecaceae,  (the palm tree family) and is also the only living member of the genus Cocos. Coconut trees are very tall, often exceeding 25 m in height. Furthermore, these trees prefer sandy soils with abundant sunlight and regular rainfall. It is also highly tolerant of salinity, hence, coconut trees were historically found in tropical coastal regions around the world. Coconut trees are usually grown for culinary purposes, however, they do have many non-culinary purposes too. For instance, the fibre from the husk of the coconut is used to manufacture coir, which is used for manufacturing mats, brushes, ropes and sacks.
