Chillies fall under the genus  capsicum , of the flowering plants. Close to 27 species have been identified under this genus, with the members varying tremendously in size, shape and colour. Most members have culinary uses, such as the  Capsicum annuum , while others are used as natural insecticides. Chillies contain a chemical called capsaicin, which is the chemical that induces the “burning” sensation when consumed.
